How do I contour?
- 3 min reading time
Contouring, that's what we call shaping your face. Making your cheekbones look higher, your face narrower and your jawline sharper. It's not that hard. Right? ;-)
When you are advanced in makeup you start by determining the shape of the face (square, round oval etc.). This way you can optimally shape the face with the help of contouring. Now we understand that not everyone is that far yet and that is why we give you a simple contour instruction below that you can apply to everyone.
What do you need for Contouring?
You can do contouring with different products. You need a color that is lighter than your own skin color and a color that is a few shades darker. You need these to create the shadows. You can work with powders or creams.
Contouring with powder
If you work with powders you can use banana powder , bronzing powder and a highlighter . Or you buy a powder contour set, there are all the colors you need in it and is therefore super easy to use.
It is nice to work with powders because you can build up the color well. You start with a thin layer. If you still don't like the effect, you can always apply a little more. If you accidentally applied too much, you can also easily remove some powder. You do this by carefully rubbing a soft powder brush over the spot. In this way you remove a layer each time.
Contouring with cream
If you want to work with creams , you can use a cream contour set. Just like the powder sets, this contains everything you need. You can also work with cream concealers . You will need a light and a dark shade of these. The nice thing about cream products is that they blend in super nicely with your foundation and that you do not get a layer of powder on your face. However, they are very pigmented, so be careful with the amount you use.
How do you start contouring?
You always start by applying a primer and a thin layer of your own foundation on top of that. Once you have done that you start shaping. You start with the light color. If you are working with creams you use a contour brush or a complexion makeup sponge . If you are working with powders you can just apply everything with a powder brush.
Apply the light color under your eyes, on top of your cheekbones, under your eyebrows, in the middle of your nose, on your cupid's bow and a little on your chin. Once you've done that, you can start with the dark color.
Apply shadow
Apply the dark color along your hairline, your jawline, along the sides of your nose and finally under your cheekbones, the part that is the deepest when you do a kiss. Make sure that the line from your ears runs to about halfway down your cheek, not all the way to your mouth.
Once you have applied everything, you are going to blend it. If you are working with powders, you do this with a large powder brush. If you are working with creams, use a makeup sponge for a nice airbrushed effect. Slowly dab the sponge over your face. Make sure that the light and dark color blend nicely into each other for a natural effect.
Highlight
When everything is nicely blended, apply some highlighter to the highest part of your cheekbones. Do this also on the tip of your nose and under your eyebrows. Apply the highlighter with e.g. a fan brush. Then you only need to apply some finishing spray and your face will look perfectly shaped all day long!
